WiseTown was ranked among the 10 finalist projects of the second call of the Finodex Accelerator for its use of Open data and Open Standards (Open311, OpenAPI). Thanks to the FIWARE ecosystem, our team has been involved in FFIWARE Mundus initiatives, such as the GCTC Tech Jam in Washington DC, the GCTC in Austin, where we participated together with the city of Todi, Assisi and Perugia, and several versions of the Smart Cities World Expo in Barcelona. He also won the 2017 GCTC Team Challenge contest with the city of Independence.
It is a fact that a large amount of computer data is generated every year in cities and is constantly increasing. The data produced mainly relates to daily life and could be used by local authorities to improve the lives of citizens. Normally it is the municipalities that have direct contact with the citizens and often they are small urban agglomerations with scarce resources; realities that often are not able to order and analyze all the information produced, nor to respond to the requests of the citizens. This difference in level between objectives and capacities can be solved by developing a Smart Data plan as a central part of a Smart City strategy. Data is the starting point for activating Civic Technologies and making them truly effective.
WiseTown (Web Information Streams Enhancer for your Town) is an ecosystem of web and mobile applications that offers analysis and management capabilities that support urban planning. The platform also allows real-time contingency analysis and event management.
WiseTown collects information from different sources, feeding its knowledge, to be able to identify issues affecting the city in various areas, including:
- urban renewal,
- waste collection,
- public safety,
- social services, transport,
- social services,
- environmental problems.
Using the Orion Context Broker is enough to qualify an application like Powered by FIWARE
FIWARE technology in WiseTown
The collection of information from heterogeneous sources is managed by WISE Orchestrator, the module interacts with social connectors, external APIs and other data sources.
In this phase, WISE Orchestrator uses FIWARE Orion Context Broker to connect with open data, which can also be indexed in a CKAN-based platform. It also uses FIWARE NGSI to manage IoT sensor feed metadata and uses Context Broker notifications to power the APIs, which are exposed for integration with other software. Using the Orion Context Broker is sufficient to qualify an application as Powered by FIWARE.
WiseTown Engine analyzes and classifies the data assigning the ownership of the information directly to the responsible office. Once acquired and correctly categorized the data, WiseTown starts its main work: the management and analysis of problem reports. WiseTown Engine is still responsible for the report workflow while Orion Context Broker sends the information to the user interface, GIS environment and database.
The most valuable part of the platform is the information it collects from citizens and its advanced management: platform supervisors can perform spatial analysis on geographic data using ESRI ArcGIS Online geoprocessing tools and business intelligence capabilities.
